PORT-AU-PRINCE — Acute hunger in Haiti is continuing on an upward trajectory and is set to reach record levels, the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) said in an October 29, 2026 statement. The agency said earlier warnings that fragile food security gains could unravel are now becoming reality, driven by violence, economic instability, poor agricultural performance, displacement and the growing impact of El Niño.

According to the latest Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) analysis, 6.35 million people are likely to be acutely food insecure from March through June 2027, an increase of more than half a million compared with the same period in 2026. Almost two million within that group will likely face Emergency (IPC 4) levels of hunger, WFP said.

With more than 1.5 million Haitians forced from their homes, people in areas controlled by armed groups and those in displacement sites are particularly vulnerable, the agency said. WFP Country Director Lauren Landis said teams are witnessing "increasing levels of desperation as violence continues to displace families."

Several rural areas are projected to deteriorate from Crisis (IPC 3) to Emergency (IPC 4). WFP said it has supported 2.6 million Haitians this year alongside the government, and urgently requires USD 78 million to sustain operations through March.
