WFP: Haiti Food Insecurity on Track to Reach Record Highs

New IPC analysis projects 6.35 million people acutely food insecure from March to June 2027, as violence, displacement and El Niño deepen the crisis.

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti — The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) says its earlier warnings about Haiti's fragile food security are becoming reality, with acute hunger on track to reach record levels. According to the latest Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) analysis cited by WFP, 6.35 million people are likely to be acutely food insecure from March through June 2027, an increase of more than half a million compared with the same period in 2026. Nearly two million within that group are expected to face Emergency (IPC 4) levels of hunger. WFP attributes the deteriorating outlook to violence, economic instability, poor agricultural performance, displacement and the growing impact of El Niño. More than 1.5 million Haitians have been forced from their homes, and WFP says displaced families living in areas controlled by armed groups or in overcrowded shelters are particularly vulnerable. "Our teams are witnessing increasing levels of desperation as violence continues to displace families," said Lauren Landis, WFP Country Director in Haiti. WFP says it has supported 2.6 million Haitians this year with emergency food, cash transfers, school meals and malnutrition prevention, working with the government. The agency says it urgently requires USD 78 million to sustain operations through March and is urging the international community to step up support.
