More than 5.94 million people in Haiti — 53% of the population — now face "crisis" levels of acute food insecurity (IPC Phase 3 or above), according to a new Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) analysis released October 28, 2026, and reported by CARE and EEW Magazine. That is an increase of nearly a quarter of a million from the same period a year earlier. The IPC projects the figure will rise to 6.35 million between March and June 2027, with nearly 2 million people likely to face Emergency conditions, the second most severe level on the scale. The UN World Food Programme warned Haiti is on track to reach record hunger levels. CARE attributes the deepening crisis to acute armed violence that has displaced more than 1.5 million people, inflation near 17%, disrupted supply chains, and El Niño-linked drought and flooding, worsened by last year's Hurricane Melissa. Dianna Darsney, CARE's global humanitarian director, said families are skipping meals, selling belongings and going into debt, with women and girls "eating least and last." The UN Security Council was recently told nearly 700 women and girls reported being raped by gangs in July and August alone. Less than half of the UN's US$880 million humanitarian appeal for Haiti in 2026 has been funded.
