Haiti's weather and disaster-management authorities have issued a yellow alert for five departments as a low-pressure system brings heavy rains and thunderstorms, according to HaitiLibre and Juno7. The Unité Hydrométéorologique d'Haïti (UHM), the Direction générale de la protection civile (DGPC) and the Secrétariat Permanent de Gestion des Risques de Désastre declared the alert for Grand'Anse, Sud, Nippes, Sud-Est and Ouest. The outlets report a depression over the central and northwestern Caribbean Sea is driving abundant rainfall, with accumulations that could reach between 50 and 100 millimeters. Effects were expected to begin the afternoon of Thursday, October 22, and continue through Friday, October 23, 2026. The rains, accompanied by strong winds and storms, risk causing flooding and landslides, particularly in high-risk and vulnerable areas, the sources said. Civil protection authorities urged residents, especially those in exposed zones, to stay informed through official weather bulletins, avoid spreading rumors, secure important documents and valuables from flooding, and prepare several days of supplies including drinking water, non-perishable food, batteries, a radio, a flashlight and medication. The population was also advised to avoid traveling to mountainous areas or near waterways during rainfall episodes.
