Haiti Places Five Departments Under Orange Alert as Heavy Rains Hit
Civil Protection warns of flooding and landslides across the West, Grand'Anse, Nippes, South and South-East, with two more departments on Yellow Alert.
On Sunday, October 25, 2026, Haiti's General Directorate of Civil Protection (DGDPC), in coordination with the Permanent Secretariat for Risk and Disaster Management (SPGRD), placed the West, Grand'Anse, Nippes, South and South-East departments under an Orange Alert, according to haitilibre.com. The Nord-Ouest and Artibonite departments were placed under a Yellow Alert.
The decision follows the presence of low-pressure systems over the Caribbean Sea, which continue to cause heavy rain and strong winds, the DGDPC said. Authorities cited a high risk of flooding, landslides, rockfalls and rough sea conditions in the affected departments, noting that significant rainfall had already been recorded in several municipalities.
The DGDPC urged residents, especially those in high-risk areas, to follow safety guidelines. These include regularly checking weather bulletins, avoiding rumors, and moving to temporary shelters if living near ravines, flood-prone watercourses or the coastline. Residents in areas prone to landslides or mudslides were advised to relocate to safe locations and coordinate with loved ones in case evacuation becomes necessary.
Authorities also advised the public to secure outdoor items that could be blown away, protect watercraft by mooring them away from the shoreline, and look out for vulnerable elderly individuals, people with disabilities and children.
