FEWS NET Warns of Flooding Hazard Across Haiti as Heavy Rains Forecast
An abnormal increase in rainfall over the next 15 days could trigger localized flooding and infrastructure damage, the monitor says.
Haiti faces an elevated flooding hazard over the coming two weeks, according to a FEWS NET Seasonal Monitor published October 30, 2026. The report warns that an abnormal increase in rainfall is expected over the next 15 days, which may lead to localized flooding and damage to infrastructure, including roads and irrigation systems. Forecast rainfall totals exceed 100 mm across the country, with localized accumulations exceeding 300 mm, raising the risk of waterlogging and crop damage. Bean crops may be particularly vulnerable to excessive moisture from heavy rainfall over a short period. Combining accumulated rainfall from October 11-20 with the forecast through November 5, most of Haiti is expected to receive between 200 and 300 millimeters of rain. Areas exceeding 300 millimeters—located primarily in the western parts of the Ouest and L'Artibonite departments—may face the highest risks. The monitor also notes improving vegetation health across most of the country, with the most significant changes in southern areas. While the rainfall will help reduce long-term seasonal deficits and recharge surface water and groundwater over the medium term, FEWS NET emphasizes the short-term risks. Temperatures are expected to decrease slightly, reducing evapotranspiration rates.
