Cash Assistance Reaches 11,135 Displaced Families in Haiti's Artibonite

A Rapid Response Mechanism (RRM) implemented by Acted, AVSI and IMPACT Initiatives is providing Multipurpose Cash Assistance (MPCA) to 11,135 displaced families in Haiti's Artibonite department, according to acted.org. The program allows households to decide for themselves how best to meet their needs through unconditional cash transfers of USD 240, an amount calculated using IMPACT Initiatives' Joint Market Monitoring Initiative data.

The response comes as displacement rises sharply. In August 2026, Artibonite was home to 183,654 internally displaced people, up from 158,358 in May, an increase the International Organization for Migration attributes primarily to the spread of armed conflict to new municipalities, acted.org reported.

According to the consortium, households spend the money mainly on food, education, healthcare, shelter rehabilitation, non-food items and debt repayment. A study conducted by IMPACT in Saint-Marc and Marchand-Dessalines in 2026 found that negative coping strategies, such as reducing portion sizes or skipping meals, were nearly halved, and that the interventions did not drive inflation.

The approach is recommended by Haiti's Cash Working Group, acted.org said. Teams work to mitigate protection risks in an unstable environment, and the consortium notes that when conditions become too dangerous, the most responsible decision may be not to intervene.
