AI-Generated Image Distorts Haitian Woman's Death, Obscuring Rural Health Crisis

PORT-DE-PAIX — An AI-generated image circulating on social media has distorted the circumstances surrounding the death of 32-year-old Salanda Thermitus, diverting attention from concerns about emergency medical services in Haiti's Northwest, The Haitian Times reported Aug. 24, 2026. Thermitus, from Mare-Rouge, Môle-Saint-Nicolas, died Aug. 12 while being transported from the Life Medical Clinic to Béraca Hospital in Pointe-des-Palmistes, a 46-mile journey, according to her family and the ambulance driver. The fabricated image depicted a heavily pregnant woman on a roadside as men dug a buried ambulance from mud — a scene her relatives and driver say did not occur. Her older sister, Betty Thermitus, said Salanda was only about three months pregnant and had fallen ill from a condition unrelated to her pregnancy. Driver Dieubon Salomon, of Haiti's National Ambulance Center (CAN), said the vehicle stopped for under an hour to repair a flat tire and was not stuck in mud; no nurse accompanied the patient. Relatives, including nephew Emayson Fraël, said the death exposed inadequate emergency care, poorly maintained ambulances and difficult roads. "State authorities must provide emergency services with adequate logistical resources," Salomon said, per the outlet.
