The UN Security Council has adopted a resolution renewing its sanctions regime on Haiti for another year, according to a statement from the United States Mission to the United Nations dated October 14, 2026. Speaking after the vote, Ambassador Jennifer Locetta, Alternative Representative for Special Political Affairs, said the Council welcomed the extension of the mandate of the Haiti Panel of Experts and the renewal of the travel ban, asset freeze and arms embargo measures. The United States thanked co-penholder Panama for its leadership and acknowledged a recent earthquake that struck that country. Locetta offered a clarifying point on the territorial arms embargo, stating it does not apply to the sale, supply or transfer of arms and related materiel, or related assistance and training, to the Government of Haiti when intended solely to further objectives of peace and stability. She said the vote signals that the international community stands with the Haitian people, and referenced a recently reauthorized mission designed to address immediate security threats. The US encouraged support for Haiti's National Commission for Disarmament, Dismantlement, and Reintegration, and called on the Haitian government to adopt a decree regulating the exploitation of baby eels, or elvers, citing illicit trade that reportedly fuels armed groups.
