Haitian sculptor and ceramist Patrick Vilaire died on Saturday, August 15, 2026, roughly a month before what would have been his 85th birthday, Le Nouvelliste and Ici Haiti reported. Vilaire was among the most influential artists of his generation, working across sculpture, ceramics, writing and collecting for more than sixty years. According to Le Nouvelliste, he combined artistic creation with research on Haitian heritage and community-based work throughout his career. Born in Port-au-Prince on September 16, 1941, he came to the visual arts early. Trained as an engineer, he studied drawing at the Galerie Rampo, the outlet reported. Le Nouvelliste described him as a visual artist, sculptor, ceramist, writer and collector whose body of work earned recognition inside and outside Haiti.
