OAS chief Ramdin urges Haiti to accelerate security and election efforts

Organization of American States (OAS) Secretary General Albert R. Ramdin closed a four-day mission to Haiti by presenting his findings and calling for accelerated efforts on security and elections, which he described as the country's two most urgent priorities, according to Le Nouvelliste. At a press conference on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, held alongside CARICOM Secretary General Carla Barnett, Ramdin urged international partners to honor their security commitments and to intensify preparations for elections scheduled for December 13. He stressed voter identification, public information and the credibility of the electoral process. The visit, organized in part by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Worship, was devoted to discussions on security, elections and national development, Le Nouvelliste reported. Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé attended the mission's closing cocktail at the El Rancho hotel, where he said, "Haiti is not alone and its recovery remains a cause carried by the entire region." During the mission, the OAS and Japan's embassy in Haiti also signed an agreement to reinforce the national identification office (ONI) ahead of the elections.
