NYC to raise daily Health Bucks benefit for SNAP recipients to $14 in 2027

The 40% increase aims to help eligible New Yorkers buy fresh produce at more than 100 farmers markets while supporting local vendors.

NEW YORK — New York City will increase the daily limit for its Health Bucks program from $10 to $14 beginning in January 2027, allowing residents who receive food assistance through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) to get more money for fresh fruits and vegetables at farmers markets, according to The Haitian Times.

Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani announced the 40% increase, saying the city expects to distribute nearly $2.3 million in Health Bucks to SNAP recipients in 2027. The program matches eligible SNAP spending on fresh produce at participating farmers markets and farm stands, with every $2 spent on eligible fruits and vegetables earning a $2 Health Bucks coupon. Recipients can use the coupons at more than 100 markets and farm stands across the city.

"As food insecurity rises, far too many families are forced to skip the fruits and vegetables," Mamdani said. NYC Health Commissioner Dr. Alister F. Martin said the higher limit would boost purchasing power while supporting local farmers, and cited links between diet and chronic illnesses such as heart disease.

The report cited NYC Health Department research finding that among adults at risk of food insecurity, nearly eight in 10 reported difficulty affording balanced meals. The program receives city funding and $5.7 million in new grant funding through the federal Gus Schumacher Nutrition Incentive Program.
