NYC to Add 10,000 Free 2-K Seats, Reaching Flatbush and East Flatbush
The fall 2027 expansion extends free care for 2-year-olds to every district in the Bronx and Staten Island, plus 17 more districts citywide.
New York City will add 10,000 free 2-K seats for 2-year-olds beginning in fall 2027, expanding access to neighborhoods including Flatbush and East Flatbush in Brooklyn, according to The Haitian Times. Mayor Zohran Mamdani, Gov. Kathy Hochul and Schools Chancellor Kamar H. Samuels announced the expansion Oct. 19, the report said. The program will reach every school district in the Bronx and all of Staten Island, while adding seats in selected districts in Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens. In Manhattan, it will expand to Districts 4 and 5, covering East and Central Harlem and surrounding areas. The city expects to offer more than 12,000 seats across 22 of New York City's 32 geographic school districts. The initial 2-K rollout began in fall 2026 with roughly 2,000 seats in five districts: District 6 in Manhattan, District 10 in the Bronx, Districts 18 and 23 in Brooklyn and District 27 in Queens. The first application cycle drew more than 5,700 applications for just over 2,000 seats, officials said in August, underscoring demand. "Today, for 10,000 more families, we have an answer," Mamdani said in a statement. Many seats are expected to operate on full-day, full-year schedules through center-based and licensed family child care programs.
