NYC Marks 9/11's 25th Anniversary With Citywide Day of Service
From meal packing to youth programs and virtual projects, volunteers across the city can honor the anniversary through service on and around Sept. 11.
New York City is marking the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks with a citywide Day of Remembrance and Service, according to The Haitian Times, which republished the resource guide from Epicenter NYC. Mayor Zohran Mamdani declared the observance on Sept. 4. The tradition dates to 2016, when then-President Barack Obama declared Sept. 11 the National Day of Service and Remembrance, honoring first responders, passengers and civilians who acted with courage after the attacks. The guide lists multiple volunteer opportunities. On Friday, Sept. 11 from 3 to 6 p.m., the Breathe For The 343 project, organized by Project Pulmonary, invites volunteers to assemble hydration kits for firefighters at Queens Community House's Forest Hills Community Center, honoring the 343 firefighters who died on 9/11. Other options include packing more than 300 grocery bags at St. Mark's Church in Jackson Heights, assembling shelf-stable meals at the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum on Sept. 10, preparing after-school supplies for Uptown Stories, and joining virtual projects such as Data Detectives phone research and handmade bracelet-making for children facing serious illness.
