The political party 'Pitit Dessalin' has formally contacted the United Nations Secretary-General and the Panel of Experts on Haiti, created under UN Security Council Resolution 2653 (2022), to challenge allegations against its leader, former Senator Moïse Jean-Charles, according to icihaiti.com. The allegations appear in report S/2026/714, paragraphs 153 to 159, which the party says attribute to Jean-Charles a personal role in controlling the glass eel (zangi, or civelle) sector. In its correspondence, the party requested 'precise and verifiable clarifications' on the basis for the claims. The party stated that the trade in glass eels is not in itself illegal, noting that Haiti's Ministry of Agriculture issues certificates to exporters meeting applicable standards, and urged a distinction between legally authorized commerce and potential infractions. Jean-Charles maintains he engages in no commercial activity in the field. 'Pitit Dessalin' asked that the allegations be backed by 'precise, verifiable, and sufficiently corroborated evidence,' and that, absent such proof, his name be removed from the relevant passages. The party said the initiative reflects a commitment to rigor and transparency, and reserved the right to pursue action before competent national and international bodies to defend its honor. The statement was issued in Port-au-Prince on October 10, 2026.
