Mgr Jean-Pierre Sander Louis-Jean named Bishop of Fort-Liberté

The Apostolic Nunciature in Haiti announced Tuesday the appointment of Mgr Jean-Pierre Sander Louis-Jean as Bishop of Fort-Liberté, according to Le Nouvelliste and ACI Prensa. Until now the auxiliary bishop of Port-au-Prince, Louis-Jean succeeds Mgr Quesnel Alphonse, S.M.M., aged 76, whose resignation was accepted by Pope Leo XIV after he passed the episcopal retirement age of 75. In its communiqué, the Nunciature invited priests, religious and lay faithful to receive the decision in a spirit of prayer, faith and hope, presenting the nomination as a fresh expression of the Holy Father's pastoral care for the Catholic Church in Haiti. According to the Vatican Press Office, the new bishop was born on October 17, 1967, in Jérémie, and is 58 years old. He studied philosophy and theology at the Notre-Dame d'Haïti Major Seminary and was ordained a priest on November 17, 1996, incardinated in the Archdiocese of Port-au-Prince. He served as a parish vicar, pastor of Saint-Pierre in Pétion-Ville (2007-2016), spiritual director, and professor of Spiritual Theology. Since 2020 he was pastor of the Notre-Dame de l'Assomption cathedral in Port-au-Prince. He was named auxiliary bishop of Port-au-Prince on May 31, 2024, and consecrated on August 3, 2024.
