Haiti Sets First-Round Elections for July 18, 2027
The Provisional Electoral Council published a revised calendar postponing the country's first presidential vote in a decade.
PORT-AU-PRINCE — Haiti's Provisional Electoral Council (CEP) published a revised electoral calendar on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, setting the first round of elections for July 18, 2027, according to Le Nouvelliste and Reuters. The move postpones what would be the country's first presidential election in a decade. According to the new calendar, the second round of the presidential and legislative elections is scheduled for October 4, 2027, with the names of all newly elected officials to be known on October 23, 2027. The CEP said it would update the software for voter registration and voting between October 19, 2026 and September 28, 2027. Reuters reported that the council had previously planned a first-round presidential vote for December 13 before announcing it was reviewing its schedule. Former President Michel Martelly registered to run for president on October 23, 2026, in Port-au-Prince, Reuters reported. The revision follows a prolonged period without elections; Le Nouvelliste noted the CEP expressed satisfaction with its record after two years without any vote. The European Union has called for preserving the credibility of the elections, according to Le Nouvelliste.
