Haiti's Government Unveils Support Measures for the New School Year

The government of Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé presented a package of support measures for the new school year during a press briefing held at the Primature on Friday, September 4, 2026, Le Nouvelliste reported. The meeting brought together the Minister of Social Affairs and Labour, Marc Elie Nelson; the director general of the Economic and Social Assistance Fund (FAES), Kesner Romilus; the director general of the National Education Fund (FNE), Jefnie Toussaint; and the Minister of Public Works, Joseph Almathe Pierre-Louis, among others. Authorities described the plan as a set of "concrete measures" intended to ease the economic burden on parents, improve learning conditions and ensure a safer return to school across the national territory. According to the outlet, financial support will be provided to 130,000 parents of schoolchildren and to 30,000 vulnerable families, through a joint effort by the MAST, the Ministry of National Education and Vocational Training (MENFP) and the FNE. The government also plans to rehabilitate 52 national schools and lycées, build and inaugurate new establishments, distribute 8,000 pieces of school furniture, and strengthen support for school canteens. The initiatives were announced as parents face high school fees and reduced purchasing power, Le Nouvelliste noted.
