Haiti's Government Unveils Support Measures for School Reopening

The government of Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé presented a package of support measures for the school reopening during a press conference held at the Primature on Friday, September 4, 2026, according to Le Nouvelliste. Officials said the measures aim to "ease the economic burden on parents, improve learning conditions for students, and ensure a safer school start across the national territory." Authorities announced that financial support will be provided to 130,000 parents of schoolchildren and to 30,000 vulnerable families, in a joint effort by the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor (MAST), the Ministry of National Education and Vocational Training (MENFP), and the National Education Fund (FNE). The government also plans the rehabilitation of 52 national schools and lycées, the construction and inauguration of new educational establishments, the distribution of 8,000 pieces of school furniture, and reinforced support for school cafeterias. The briefing brought together Minister of Social Affairs and Labor Marc Elie Nelson, FAES Director General Kesner Romilus, FNE Director General Jefnie Toussaint, and Public Works Minister Joseph Almathe Pierre-Louis, among others. Le Nouvelliste reported the measures come amid high school fees and reduced purchasing power straining families.
