Haiti PM Fils-Aimé Affirms Elections Will Be Held This Year
Prime Minister sets December 13 first vote amid ongoing armed-group crisis, according to Le Nouvelliste.
PORT-AU-PRINCE — Haitian Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé reaffirmed that the country will hold elections this year, with the first vote scheduled for December 13, according to the daily Le Nouvelliste as reported by almomento.net on August 14. Speaking at the inauguration of new facilities for the Bon Berger Evangelical College in the southern Mélinette region — a building destroyed by the 2021 earthquake — Fils-Aimé called on all sectors to participate, especially young people. "I guarantee you there will be elections, whether some like it or not," he said, according to the newspaper.
His government faces difficulties organizing the year-end vote alongside the Provisional Electoral Committee amid the general crisis caused by armed groups. During a national tour, the prime minister urged authorities, educators, students and community members to support the process, encouraging citizens to register to vote or run for office.
"Go register, elect your future representatives and, why not, even run for public office," he emphasized, lamenting a lack of officials in the south able to defend regional interests.
Electoral authorities have so far approved 17 coalitions grouping 228 political parties, in accordance with Article 129 of the electoral decree published June 2.
