Haiti is marking the 150th anniversary of the birth of Jean Price-Mars, the ethnologist, writer, physician, diplomat and politician born October 15, 1876, in Grande-Rivière-du-Nord, according to Le Nouvelliste. In the second of a series on his life and work, the newspaper recalls that Price-Mars published his major book, 'Ainsi parla l'Oncle' ('So Spoke the Uncle'), in 1928. Le Nouvelliste reports that although Price-Mars pursued careers in medicine, diplomacy and politics, he is remembered above all as a writer and ethnologist. Until his death in Pétion-Ville on March 1, 1969, he published essays in history, anthropology and literary criticism, as well as more than a hundred articles, speeches and lectures. His books are studied and translated into several languages. The newspaper notes that his intellectual engagement took shape during the American Occupation, citing a position he began articulating in April 1917. According to Le Nouvelliste, a commemorative day is planned for October 30 to celebrate Price-Mars' heritage. The outlet's coverage appears in both English and French editions.
