Haiti in the Fog, Beyond the Weather
Le Nouvelliste editorial says a sense of lost direction deepened after a reported October 18 incident involving the anti-gang force.
A Le Nouvelliste editorial published under the title 'Haiti in the Fog, Beyond the Weather' describes the country, and particularly the Port-au-Prince metropolitan area, as under rain for two days, with poor visibility caused by the downpours. The editorial argues that the heaviest lack of visibility, however, has nothing to do with the weather, conveying a persistent sense that the governing of the country is slipping beyond control. According to the piece, this feeling is not new but intensified after October 18, 2026, when members of the anti-gang repression force — described as four Salvadorans for certain, and possibly other people — were involved in an incident. The full article is behind the outlet's registration wall. Related Le Nouvelliste coverage reports that the weather caused four deaths, two missing persons and more than 3,200 affected families, and that missing Salvadoran soldiers were reported, with bodies handed over to authorities. Le Nouvelliste cites Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele confirming 'these are not our men,' and reports Dominican President Luis Abinader offered assistance to Bukele.
