Members of the government and senior state officials are prohibited from standing as candidates in Haiti's upcoming elections, even if they were to resign immediately, according to Le Nouvelliste. The outlet reports that the restriction is grounded in two documents published in the official journal Le Moniteur: the National Pact for Stability and the Organization of Elections, and the electoral decree. While the electoral decree does not define what constitutes a member of the government, it does provide a definition of a senior state official, Le Nouvelliste notes. In a related report, Le Nouvelliste says Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé met on Monday, Aug. 17, 2026, at the National Palace with Organization of American States (OAS) Secretary General Albert Ramdin. Discussions covered security, the electoral process, justice, sustainable development and economic recovery, according to a statement from the Primature. During the meeting, Haiti signed agreements with the Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean (CAF) concerning immunities, exemptions and privileges, as well as the country's integration into that institution. The OAS has urged credible elections and warned against a contested vote.
