BRH warns of surge in cyberattacks targeting Haiti's financial system
In a notice dated October 19, 2026, Haiti's central bank urged financial institutions to strengthen defenses and refuse ransom demands.
The Bank of the Republic of Haiti (BRH) has alerted clients of the financial system and the general public to an unprecedented surge in cyberattacks over the past five years, both regionally and globally, according to Le National and Le Nouvelliste. In a notice dated October 19, 2026, the central bank warned that these attacks are not sparing Haiti and that they particularly target the country's financial sector. The BRH reminded that no Haitian financial institution is authorized to negotiate with cybercriminals should they demand a ransom following a cyberattack. In the event of a computer incident, the central bank urged institutions to activate their contingency and business continuity plans and to take the necessary steps to reinforce the robustness of their systems, in line with the conclusions of a forensic analysis of the incident. The BRH noted that Haitian financial institutions are already subject to standards requiring reliable and secure information systems to reduce cybersecurity risks. The institution added that since 2023 it has strengthened its cybersecurity actions, notably through training and awareness efforts aimed at increasing the resilience of technological infrastructure and encouraging responsible behavior against cyber threats.
