American Airlines officially resumed operations in Haiti on Sunday, November 1, 2026, restoring its daily route between Miami, Florida, and Cap-Haïtien after a nearly two-year suspension, according to Le Nouvelliste and NY Carib News. The inaugural flight departed Miami International Airport, marking the airline's return to Haiti and its 100th destination in Latin America and the Caribbean. The route is operated with Boeing 737 aircraft. According to NY Carib News, the inaugural flight was operated by an all-Haitian, Creole-speaking crew led by Captain Oliver Jean, a Haiti-born pilot with 29 years of experience, an arrangement intended to make Haitian passengers more comfortable. American Airlines suspended its flights to Haiti in November 2024 after aircraft operated by U.S. carriers were struck by gunfire over Port-au-Prince, prompting the Federal Aviation Administration to restrict U.S. commercial flights to Toussaint Louverture International Airport. The FAA restriction does not cover Cap-Haïtien. American had previously discontinued service to the northern city in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic. Juan Carlos Liscano, American Airlines Senior Vice President of Miami Operations, said: "For thousands of Haitian families this connection is essential." Le Nouvelliste reported the resumption followed months of works, institutional steps and preparations involving government authorities, airport officials and company representatives. Commercial service to Port-au-Prince has not resumed.
